I didn’t know that the Philippine National Police (PNP) has its Women and Children Protection Desk (WCPD) in every police station until I read about it from a newspaper few weeks ago. I think this project is very helpful in protecting women and children from abuse and violence. In a nation where domestic violence is prevalent, I think a project like this fortifies not only the mission of the PNP to protect the nation from any form of violence, but as well as the advocacy of fighting for women and children rights.
Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary and Chairman of the National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) Ronnie Puno had ordered the PNP to put up the WCPD in every municipality in the country to develop and reinforce its responsibility in giving protection to women and children. The WCPD serves as a “one stop shop” that will provide investigation and treatment for women and children who are victims of abuse and other forms of violence inflicted upon them.
The WCPDs are also staffed with female cops, which comprise 10% of the overall count of cops in the Philippines, to offer a relaxed ambiance to those women and children victims. Female cops may relate more to the situation of abused women and children and may deal with them appropriately. Most of the WCPDs have facilities that provide shelter to take care of the victims. This is to offer the victims women and children-friendly atmosphere to shelter them for the moment.
The WCPDs are also being strengthened by the PNP through instituting partnership with non-government organizations committed in women and children rights protection. This is to continue expanding its duty to protect women and children against abuse and violence. Not only the Philippine National Police orients their officers about the rights of women and children but they also train their police officers on the essential skills needed to efficiently employ laws and protection for women and children.
I think this kind of project deliberately helps the Filipinos, specifically women and children, to realize that we have at least this kind of support from government organization such as the PNP. It only makes it easier for women and children to communicate their rights against violence and exploitation without getting abashed. It’s time to properly practice our right of freedom from any kind of violence. It’s time to become well-informed about this kind of program that protects and supports our freedom, not only as Filipinos, but as a human as well.
